Over the last several weeks, I’ve gotten emails from many of you, asking about homeschooling, balancing homeschooling and work, and many other wonderful homeschooling-reated questions that we are going to start exploring here on the blog.
Here at Cheeky Bums, we talk about raising vintage kids in a modern world – and homeschooling goes hand-in-hand with our mission.
Homeschooling, in it’s very nature, takes us back to being family-centric and wisdom-focused.
However, there are many facets to homeschooling that we want to look at… and there may be a few myths that we’ll dispel along the way…
ahem. for example…
This morning, my kids and I snuggled under a blanket, drank hot chocolate by the fireplace, and read several chapters in Little House On The Prairie.
Yesterday at the same time, my 2nd grader was crying over her Math lesson. Again. My Kindergartner was cutting up 437 sheets of paper for no apparent reason and my almost-2 year old had stripped down to his diaper and was running through the house, screaming like a Banshee, wearing goggles and covered in yogurt from his breakfast. (I wish I was exaggerating…as you can see, I’m not…)
Obviously today went a little better than yesterday, but when you homeschool, you also roll with the punches (…and the crazies…)
Over the next few weeks (and maybe months, who knows?) we are going to be exploring the topic of homeschooling for those of you that have wondered if it really WAS possibly to school your children at home…

I’ve got two as well that we’re homeschooling right now! 3rd and 1st grade, with one to start next year and then a 2.5 yr old. I definitely understand how crazy it can sometimes be!

I’m really looking forward to reading this series. We are in the very early stages of considering home schooling. I’m not even sure yet what questions I have beyond whether or not I would go completely insane. I appreciate your willingness to share your insights.

Following via facebook from the adorned blog hop. We are a homeschool family as well. I have three children and it has not always been easy, but I think we are a closer family for it. My kids know I am personally invested in their learning. My son is getting his GED this year and will be starting at Augusta State’s junior college this summer. He plans on joining the nursing program when he is able. Did I mention he is only 15 ( soon to be 16 in March). Homeshoolers are amazing individuals. I’ve often thought about homeschooling, but worry how good I would be. How do you measure or assess progress? I’m not a fan of standardized testing, but are there any sort of metrics you use to see how things are going?
Megan – the quick answer is – there are different answers! we’ll be covering that in one of our posts, but it is all state-dependent. Some states actually require standardized testing while others don’t. Stay tuned – we’ll definitely get to this question! – kelsi
Hi!! The topic I need explored is I want to homeschool but…my child won’t listen to me when I try to teach him things. He is so smart, and he listens intently to other adults when they are sharing things he should/could learn, but me??? He pretty much does the “plug his ears and say la-la-la” when I try to show him anything. How do I overcome that?
